Qualifying to Drive

As a missionary, you will have the opportunity, if desired, to drive a mission car while serving in the mission. The Church pays for all automobile expenses and car insurance (missionaries can be removed from their family insurance policy during their mission).

Qualification Requirements

You will need to complete the following steps online to qualify to drive before leaving home for the MTC:

Go to the Missionary Portal and click Other Tools > Missionary Driver Qualification. Complete all the required information on the following tabs:

  • Personal Driving Record
  • Commitment To Drive
  • Missionary Driver Document
  • Missionary Driver Training.

Once the information is completed, the mission vehicle coordinator and mission president review the information and qualify you to drive.

Taking care of these tasks can take some time. We strongly suggest you start now.

For your information, approximately 70% of our proselyting areas have automobiles assigned to them.

Accidents, Moving Violations and Parking Tickets

The Church is self-insured which means that any loss caused by accidents in which the missionary is at fault is paid from the tithing funds of the Church.  Passengers in the car are expected to remain awake and alert to help avoid accidents.

MOVING VIOLATIONS, PARKING TICKETS AND TOWING:  Fines will be split between the driver and all passengers in the car.  California has strict parking laws with continual enforcement and heavy fines.

When a mission car is ticketed, it is mailed to the mission office or left on the windshield of the car.  The mission pays all fines immediately to keep itself in good financial standing.  Then the missionary is obligated to reimburse the tithing funds of the church from his or her personal (not MSF – Mission Support Funds) or family funds since church tithing monies cannot be used to pay for fines or tickets.
